Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) takes place every winter with its mammoth array of discounts, competitions, prizes, fireworks and entertainment. The festival began in 1996 as an initiative of the Dubai government to promote trade, and it gets bigger and better every year. DSF is not only a retail festival, but also a family festival with a large focus on mall-based entertainment and early evening shows.

Its continued success is proven by the large number of tourists from not only the GCC but also the rest of the world.

Traditionally, the festival runs from mid-January to the end of February and it kicks off with a huge opening night that features light shows and fireworks across the Dubai Creek, which are then continued throughout the entire festival. Other events associated with DSF range from in-mall fashion shows, musicians, street performers, jugglers and other entertainers.

The Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon and Dubai Half Marathon have been held in the city since the year 2000 under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. It is one of the first sporting events on the city’s calendar, occurring at the end of January, taking advantage of the cooler winter temperatures.

The race takes place along the straight and scenic Jumeirah Beach Road. In 2011 the male winner, Kenyan David Baramasai, completed the marathon in just two hours and seven minutes while the female winner, Ethiopian Asselefech Medessa, completed the race in two hours and 22 minutes.

The total prize money for the marathon is USD $1 million with both male and female first place winners receiving USD $250,000 each – making it the largest prize for distance running in the world. There is also a USD $1 million prize for anyone who beats a world record, but so far this has been left unclaimed.

The winner of the shorter 10 kilometre road race wins AED 4,000 and there is also a three kilometer fun run for residents to enter. In 2011 the three races attracted 14,000 participants from around the globe, including a huge number of international professional athletes. The Dubai Marathon has become bigger and better each year, attracting many local and global sponsors.

The race is a major attraction and many people gather to watch and support the runners as many of the 10km and 3km participants run to raise money for local and international charities.

The Omega Dubai Desert Classic is held every year in January or February at the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis Course. It started in 1989 as the prestigious European tour included Asia for the first time and it was the 38th event on the tour. It is promoted and organised by the umbrella organisation Golf in Dubai.

Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis Course was the first grass course in the Middle East and it has been named one of the world’s top 100 courses. Although golfers love the course, its final hole is known to be difficult due to the fact that it has a double green and backs onto a lake.

The Omega Dubai Desert Classic attracts some of the biggest names in golf. Tiger Woods has featured at the event six times since 2001 and has won it twice. However, the most successful golfer at this event has been Ernie Els who has played in 12 different years and has won the competition three times. The youngest player to walk away with the trophy was Northern Ireland golfer Rory McIlroy who was just 19 years old when he won in 2009. Spaniard Alvaro Quiros won it in 2011, beating the world’s top three, including Tiger Woods.

The tournament also attracts big name sponsors such as the National Bank of Dubai, CNN, Emirates Airlines and BMW. The total prize money for the tournament totals USD $2.5 million, with the winner of the Dubai Desert Classic walking away with just under half a million dollars. As part of the European Tour, the Dubai Desert Classic is also part of the Race to Dubai, an annual bonus pool of USD $7.5 million which is distributed amongst the top ranking 15 players at the end of every season. The winner after nearly 50 tournaments around the world is handed USD $1.5million.

Takes place at the end of May or the beginning of April at the Meydan Racecourse, only a short drive from the main city. The Dubai World Cup began in 1996 and is organized by the Emirates Horse Racing Authority. The event was formulated by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the present ruler of Dubai, as a way of promoting equine sport and Dubai as a tourist destination. The race takes place as part of a wider series of events and with a prize of USD $10 million, it is the most valuable race in the world. The winner of the first Dubai World Cup was a horse named Cigar from the United States. The winner in 2011 was a horse named Victoire Pisa, ridden by Micro Demuro. The Dubai World Cup is also a huge annual social event, comparable to the UK's Ascot Races. As much as the horses are the major draw, fashion is clearly the second. Dubai's residents turn out in their finest garb and a stunning selection of hats as the stadium plays host to the all day racing festival, often ending with music concerts from international artists. Tickets to the Dubai World Cup sell quickly and often sell out. If you are planning to attend, it is best to buy your tickets as soon as possible.
